It is ironic how a close loss can be more painful than a blow out. Tuesday night, we had a chance to beat Division I rival and Ivy League member Princeton University. For many of us, the desire to beat them came from their Ivy League status, not the fact that they are Division I. Beating an Ivy is always huge for us; especially a team like Princeton that contrary to popular belief, always puts a good solid team on the court.
We weren’t that lucky on Tuesday. After winning games two and three, we dropped both games four and five and lost the match. It is pretty safe to say that by the end of game three (we were up 2-1), our coaching staff, our bench, our starters, and even our statistician could smell the victory coming. The fact that we were unable to close in games four and five is what made the bus ride back to the city strangely quiet.
We usually get pretty loud in the bus by playing games, making fun of whoever falls asleep or watching our favorite comedy movie in our high-tech bus entertainment system. Laughter usually dominates every minute of every bus ride. This one, however, was not so comical. There was such an overwhelming sense of defeat that we even decided not to stop for food and go straight home. That was a first.
Everybody was thinking of what had just happened and why it happened, and the intensifying snow was really not helping at all.
