The New York University women's golf team captured the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate Invitational on Sunday, March 19. The event was hosted by Oglethorpe University in Jekyll Island, GA. This is the first time in program history that NYU has recorded a win in this three-day tournament.
Shooting 934 overall (318 on Sunday), the #13
Golfstat.com ranked Violets finished nine strokes ahead of second-place and #4 ranked Rhodes College (943).
"This is a huge win for us, an amazing accomplishment," said Head Coach
Brad Johnson. "This is a premier event, and we just got out there and hit the ball. We got hot and won it.
"We wanted to see if we could do better than last year (third place in 2016)," continued Johnson. "Winning the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship gave us momentum. This more than likely got us into the NCAA Championship. We beat a lot of great teams out there."
Despite not being able to hang on to the individual title, sophomore
Patty Treevichaphan again led NYU, finishing with a fourth-place score of 232 (76-73-83).
"Patty overall has been incredible," said Johnson. "She first won UAA's and then came here and shot incredible scores. She has played phenomenal. One round doesn't define her play. She has been the highlight of the trip."
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Sophomore
Jenni Bluetling continued her solid tournament by finishing in a five-way tie for 11th, shooting 235 (81-74-80) over the weekend.
- Junior
Alyssa Poentis and freshman
Arisa Kimura trailed right behind in a tie for 16th, scoring 236.
- Freshman
Ashley Tsoi shot 241 (81-80-80) over the three days and tied for 28th.
"I am proud of this entire team," said Johnson. "This truthfully tells me we can win the NCAA's, and the girls now believe it too."
NYU will enjoy a small respite before returning for the Vassar College Invitational being held at the Duchess Country Club on Saturday-Sunday, April 8-9, in Poughkeepsie, NY.
