NYU Tennis Duo Named Second Team All-UAA

Matt DeMichiel and Laila El Dessouki Recognized



Two New York University tennis players were named to Second Team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) on Thursday, April 28.

Matt DeMichiel and Laila El Dessouki were recognized for their performances at #5 singles at the UAA Championships, which took place from Thursday to Sunday, April 21-24, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.

DeMichiel won all three of his UAA singles matches without dropping a set. The Hewlett, NY, native recorded NYU's lone victory in the Violets' 8-1 first-round defeat to Emory University, ranked #1 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). He won that match 6-3, 7-6. The junior then posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory in a consolation-round loss to #6 Case Western Reserve University. In the seventh-place contest, DeMichiel won 6-3, 6-1 as the Violets toppled the University of Rochester.

DeMichiel finished the 2015-16 campaign 14-5 in singles.

El Dessouki also went undefeated in singles at the UAA's for the #29 Violets. The Giza, Egypt, native came back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 as NYU fell 8-1 to #12 Washington University in St. Louis. In the consolation round, the Violets fell to #30 Brandeis University despite El Dessouki's 6-3, 6-1 victory. The junior posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory in NYU's triumph over Rochester to capture seventh place.

El Dessouki posted a 13-6 singles record this season.
