New York University women's fencing's senior
Jess Sherman was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week on Monday, February 17, after her performance at the Cobra Regional Open Circuit in Jersey City, NJ.
The competition was an A2 tournament during which Sherman competed against 63 other epee fencers, going 5-1 in pools. In direct elimination, she beat Lyric Lott 15-5 to make the Round of 32, Ashley Hahn 15-9 to make it the Round of 16, Nicolette Vigna 15-12, and Erica Korb 15-3 to make the top four.
Sherman was one of two fencers with a "D" rating to make it into the top 16, as well as the only fencer with lower than a "B" rating to crack the top 12. She then fenced and lost to Hellen Jolley, an A13 fencer, 15-14, tying for third place. With this win, Sherman received her B14 and is now qualified to fence in the Division I-A Championship at the summer nationals this July.
Sherman has compiled an overall record of 23-30 for NYU this year. This is her second UAA Athlete of the Week award of the season, as well as her career.
Sherman's next competition will be with the rest of Violets on Friday, Febrauary 21, at Columbia University in New York, NY.
