Hans Engel of the New York University men's fencing team won a bronze medal at the North America Cup on Saturday, November 8, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Engel, a freshman from Seattle, WA, competed in the Junior Epee portion of the event. He came into the tournament as the #19 seed and went undefeated through six pool-play matches before falling in the semifinals and ultimately finishing tied for third place.
"Hans fenced very well with great discipline all day," said Violets' Assistant Coach
Kornel Udvarhelyi. "He gave it all he had and the whole team and coaches are proud of him."
Engel was joined in the Junior Epee competition by NYU teammate
John Cramerus, who finished in 141st place. The Violets were represented in the Junior Foil competition by
Daniel Sconzo (ninth place),
Philip Shin (11th place) and,
Yash Srivastav (98th place). NYU was also represented by
Quinten Burgunder, who finished in 51st place in the Junior Sabre competition.
NYU returns to action on Sunday, December 7, for the Tradition Tournament hosted by Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. The Violets will face Penn State University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Vassar College, Temple University, and the host Pioneers.
