ECAC ReleaseCassie Steinberg and
Amy Elgin of the New York University women's soccer team were honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on Tuesday, October 7.
Steinberg, a sophomore goalkeeper for the Violets, was named ECAC Division III Metro Defensive Player of the Week after she posted two shutouts for NYU in a 2-0 week. The Boca Raton, FL, native began by making two saves for her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory vs. Farmingdale State College on Monday, September 29, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY. She followed that up with a season-high-tying four saves in her fourth shutout of the season during the Violets' 1-0 double-overtime victory over the University of Rochester in their University Athletic Association (UAA) opener.
This is Steinberg's first-career weekly honor, adding to her 2013 Honorable Mention All-UAA recognition.
Elgin was named ECAC Division III Metro Rookie of the Week after leading the Violets' offensive attack in their two victories last week. She began by scoring her first-career goal versus the Rams on Monday and followed that up with the game-winning-goal -- the only score of the double-overtime contest -- to defeat the Yellowjackets on Saturday.
This is also the first-ever weekly honor for Elgin, who now has five total points on the season.
Steinberg, Elgin and the rest of the Violets will be back in action when they travel to Cleveland, OH, to face Case Western Reserve University in its second UAA contest of the year
on Saturday, October 11. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
