A trio of New York University men's sabre fencers won the silver medal at the Division 1 North American Circuit Event, which was held in Virginia Beach, VA, on Saturday, January 18.

NYU's threesome of sophomores Andrew Kelly and Alec Martini, and freshman Quinten Burgunder advanced to the Round of 4 by defeating the Gold Coast sabre team 45-35.

The NYU trio then defeated the University College of San Diego 45-37 to advance to the gold medal bout.  In the final, the Violet fencers competed against the Peter Westbrook Foundation and lost a close match for the gold medal 45-39.

"The final was a great match which saw several lead changes," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "It was a close-fought match all the way. Our athletes did a great job."

The entire NYU men's fencing team returns to action when the Violets host the NYU Invitational on Saturday, January 25, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan. The competition, which features all NCAA Division I opponents, includes the University of Notre Dame, Ohio State University and the University of North Carolina.
