Brandon Jones of the New York University wrestling team finished fifth at 133 pounds at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships to earn All-America honors. The NCAA Championships were held at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena in Cedar Rapids, IA, on Friday-Saturday, March 15-16.

Seeded fifth at 133 pounds coming into the NCAA's, Jones went 2-0 on Friday and 1-2 on Saturday to cap an outstanding sophomore season with the fifth-place finish. A second semester transfer from Iowa State University, he ended his first year at NYU with a 17-2 record and became the ninth All-American in program history.

Patrick Sheehan was NYU's other competitor at the NCAA Championships. Sheehan went 2-2 on Friday, falling just one win shy of garnering All-America honors.

NYU finished tied for 30th out of 64 schools in the team standings. Wartburg College won its third consecutive National Championship with 103 points, 21 more than runner-up Elmhurst College.

Highlights

- Jones reached Saturday's 133-pound championship semifinal after going 2-0 on Friday. In a battle of unbeatens in the semis, he lost a 5-1 decision to #1 seed Kenny Anderson of Wartburg. Anderson, last year's National Champion at 125 pounds, extended his winning streak to 45 bouts and went on to capture 133-pound National Championship.

- With the first loss of his NYU career, Jones moved to the consolation semifinals. He was again defeated, dropping a 5-0 decision to #2 seed Nathan Fitzenreider of North Central College. Fitzenreider went on to finish third at 133.

- Jones concluded the tournament in the Fifth-Place Match against #3 seed Alex Gomez of Ithaca College. He bounced back from his two earlier losses with a 5-3 decision over Gomez, securing fifth place in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships.

“In my opinion, Brandon wrestled the two best kids at his weight class,” said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. “This tournament showed him where he is and how much harder he needs to work to bring home a National Championship.”

The NCAA's concluded one of the most successful seasons in NYU wrestling history. In addition to sending Jones and Sheehan to the NCAA Championships, the squad went 15-1 in dual meets and ended the regular season ranked #17 in Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

“This has been a great season for us,” noted Luce. “With our incoming recruits and a strong group of returners, we plan on improving upon it next season.”
