It was a successful day of competition for the New York University wrestling team at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Invitational on Saturday, January 19, in Riverdale, NY.

There was no team scoring, but NYU was able to continue the momentum of its current seven-match win streak as the grapplers finished with one individual champion and three runner-up finishes.

“This was a great opportunity for our freshmen to showcase themselves, and they definitely rose to the occasion,” said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. “It was also great to see DJ Albonico come away with his first individual title."

Highlights:

-Albonico (141) had a superb day on the mats as he bested his opponents in every bout en route to the individual title and a 4-0 record. He tallied his fourth fall of the season, as well. Also in the 141-pound division, Corbin Lee went 5-1 on the day and placed third in the weight class. He recorded two falls, his fifth and sixth of the season.

-In the 184-pound weight class, both Brian Anderson and Jon Guarino turned in strong performances. Anderson went 2-1 and posted a second-place finish, the highest of his collegiate career. Guarino turned in a third-place finish with a 4-1 record.

-Matt DiGiovanni fell just short of the individual title in the 149-pound weight class, finishing runner-up with a 2-1 record.

-Sam Galassi and Dan Brereton had impressive performances in the 197-pound weight class. Galassi finished runner-up and went 2-0, but was forced to withdraw from the final bout due to injury. Brereton dropped his opening match, yet battled back to win four of his next five bouts to claim fourth place.

-Sean Billings was able to rebound after an early loss in the winners bracket to secure a fifth-place finish in the 133-pound division, the first placement of his collegiate career.

-Janik Santana-Quintana (125) wrestled tough in his four matches, going 2-2 and recording a fourth-place finish.

-Gabe Gleason was able to capture fifth place after defeating teammate Sam Friedfeld, who claimed the sixth-place spot in the 157-pound division. Gleason went 2-2 with two major decisions, while Friedfeld finished with a 2-3 record, including a major decision and a fall.

-John Fitzsimmons took home a fourth-place finish in the 165-pound weight class, recording a 2-2 record and a major decision.

-Anthony Chu went 2-2 to round out an overall solid day of wrestling for NYU.

The grapplers will look to extend their win streak and stay atop the Centennial Conference standings next Saturday, January 26, against Washington and Lee University and Johns Hopkins University in Lexington, VA.
