A number of team members from the New York University men's track and field team participated in the annual Seamus McElligot Invitational, hosted by Haverford College in Haverford, PA, on February 4.
The Violets were buoyed by the performance of
Gilson Cortes, who finished third in both the 60 meter dash (7.27) and 200 meter dash (23.55). Teammates
Ramon Perez and
Robert Fernandez also had solid showings in the 60 meter dash, finishing 12th (7.55) and 14th (7.61), respectively.
Not to be outdone,
Zac Kish ran what head coach Nick McDonough described as a "tactical race" in the 800 meter run.
"Zac put up a pedestrian type time over the course of the first 400 meters, but turned it on during the last two laps and at that point it turned in to a kicker's race," McDonough revealed.
Kish went on to win the race with a time of 2:02.44.
Others posting noteworthy performances included
Ryan Gilmore, who notched a personal-best time of 4:26.55 en route to finishing sixth in the mile.
Kevin Bonilla opened his season with a very respectable showing in the 3,000 meter run, notching an eighth-place time of 9:03.09.
Shot-putter
Zach Ship also produced an eighth-place finish (10.57 meters).
McDonough noted that this was an out-of-the-ordinary weekend for the Violets.
"Some athletes competed at the Armory on Friday and some at Haverford on Saturday," McDonough explained. "We used today's race at Haverford as more of a tune-up for Boston next week."
McDonough was alluding to next week's Boston University Valentines Invitational, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, February 10-11.
