The New York University women's tennis team finished play at the NYSWCAA Championships on Sunday, October 14, with another strong effort. The Violets won two singles titles and two doubles titles on the last day of the competition, which was held at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY.
For the day, NYU was 2-2 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles to conclude an impressive performance that included four titles and six finals appearances.
Highlights
- Sophomore Mari Tzakis finished a strong weekend of play by capturing the #3 singles title. She defeated Alex Smith of Skidmore College 6-4, 6-4 in the final match.
- Freshman Madeline King also won her finals match. She bested Casey Nicoletti of William Smith College 6-3, 6-0 to win the #4 singles championship.
- Tzakis and King also combined to win a title at #2 doubles. The Violet tandem bested a pair from Skidmore 8-5 in their final match.
- The Violets also earned a title at #3 doubles, where senior captain Ariel Sultan and junior Ramya Pokala took their final match from a William Smith team 8-6.
- Freshman Alison Wang saw her quest for a title at #2 singles ended as she was unable to compete in her finals match with Lew Ford of Skidmore due to injury. Wang, who rolled her ankle during Saturday's play, partnered with fellow freshman Ashley Masanto in the #1 doubles final, where they fell 8-3 to a Skidmore pair.
"Both Mari and Madeline had to battle today to win their singles titles," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "Mari won two close sets and Madeline played a hard first set before taking the second 6-0. It was impressive to see them play so well individually and continue that success winning at #2 doubles.
"Ramya and Ariel were also very impressive winning at #3 doubles," Choy continued. "Ariel is graduating in December, so this was her last collegiate competition. We are thrilled she was able to go out on a high note."
The NYSWCAA Championships were the last competition for the Violets in the fall semester. They return to the court February 23 to face Haverford College in Haverford, PA.
"I'm very happy with what we've shown in the fall season," added Choy. "Reaching six finals this weekend and winning four titles shows the depth and balance we have both in singles and doubles heading into dual-match season. For now, it is good to rest and regroup so we'll be ready in the spring."
