Wrestling Goes 2-0 on Family Day

Team Honors Seniors, Beats Scranton and Morrisville State

Clement Bommier, Matt Magill and Steve Contino went a combined 6-0 to wrap up their home careers.
The New York University wrestling team swept both its matches as it defeated Morrisville State College and the University of Scranton at its annual Family Day event on Saturday, February 19, at the Coles Center in Manhattan, NY.

The team's first match pitted NYU against Morrisville State. After an opening-round loss put the grapplers down 3-0, NYU went on to win seven of the next eight bouts as it cruised to a 31-10 victory.

Steve Massey (197) pinned his opponent in 1:16, David Rice (174) had a tech fall win, and Dan Gorman (149) and Sabino Galassi (184) both pitched in with major decision victories.

NYU followed its strong team performance against Morrisville State with an equally impressive 39-9 win over Scranton.

Leading the way were Will Ladnier (125), Steven Contino (133), Clement Bommier (141), and Gorman (149), as the four gave NYU a 20-0 advantage before Scranton was able to put points on the board.  Ladnier took a forfeit win, Contino had a 6-3 decision victory, Bommier pinned his opponent in 1:38, and Gorman followed with a 20-4 tech fall victory.

Rudy De La Cruz (285) capped off the match with a fall in 1:52, his second pin of the season.

“Rudy dug down deep and pulled out a big win,” remarked assistant coach Shawn Swift. “He didn't give up and ended up pinning his guy. For that he deserves a lot of credit.”

In between the two matches, NYU honored its three seniors for their contributions to the program. Contino, Bommier and Matt Magill (165) all received plaques and a nice reception from the crowd. Magill also was honored with a plaque for reaching the 100-career win milestone earlier in the season.

All three seniors finished up their home careers on a high note, as the trio went 6-0 on the day.

“Overall, we wrestled the way we should have today,” said Swift. “Almost all of our guys wrestled up to their potential and it showed, as a bunch of guys had multiple victories.”

Contino, Bommier, Gorman, Magill, Galassi, and Massey all produced two victories apiece.

Massey had a big day as he pinned both of his opponents, with both falls coming in just over one minute.

Magill and Galassi continued their strong seasons as the pair continue to lead the team in victories. Magill is now undefeated in his last 10 bouts and is 31-8 on the season. Galassi is 8-2 in his last 10 bouts and 22-13 overall this season.

NYU finishes its dual-meet schedule with a final record of 9-10.

“This was a strong finish to our season,” said Swift. “With all of the injuries and hurdles that our team has gone through this season, to end with these two wins is good for the team.”

The grapplers are in action next Sunday, February 27, when they travel to King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, to compete in the Metropolitan Conference Championships, where individual bids to the NCAA Tournament will be determined.
