Women’s Volleyball Ranked in Preseason Poll

Lands at #21 in AVCA Rankings

Following a season in which it reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and with just one senior graduated from that squad, the New York University women's volleyball team is ranked #21 in Division III in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Preseason Poll.

The Violets received 98 total votes in the poll, achieving their first national ranking since 2007, when they were picked 20th in the preseason poll.  From 2003-06, NYU spent a total of 29 weeks in the national ranking.

The Violets did not find themselves in the national rankings all of last season, but ended the regular season atop the New York Region.  They earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and the right to host the New York Regional, where they topped NYU-Poly in straight sets before falling in the second round to Christopher Newport University.

NYU is joined by two other University Athletic Association (UAA) squads in the preseason rankings: #1 and defending national champion Washington University, and #3 Emory University.  The Violets will also take on four other teams in the preseason poll in 2010: #2 and national runner-up Juniata College, #12 Trinity (Texas) College, #13 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and #20 University of Texas-Dallas.

Another UAA school, University of Chicago, also received votes (12) in the poll, as did one other NYU 2010 opponent, defending Centennial Conference champion Haverford College (22).  Thus, the Violets will face eight teams represented in the preseason rankings.
