Willock Earns Spot on U.S. National Fencing Team

Will Compete in Paris from November 4-13 at 2010 Senior World Championships

Willock, current assistant fencing coach and former Violet standout, placed 13th in women's epee to garner a spot on the national team.

Assistant men's and women's fencing team coach Lauren Willock recently secured a spot as a member of the United States National Fencing Team that will compete at the 2010 Senior World Championships in Paris, France, from November 4-13.

Willock, a former four-year standout for the Violets' fencing team from 2003-07, earned her place on the national team following her 13th-place performance in the Division I women's epee group at the U.S. Fencing Summer National Championships held in Atlanta, GA, from July 4-13

“I am really excited to have earned my spot on the team,” Willock said. “I have been working really hard all year to improve in international competitions, and I feel confident that I can help our epee team succeed at Worlds.”

Selected as one of four members on the epee team, Willock will help lead the U.S. fencing squad against 15 other teams in Paris. She is one of 24 individuals named to the U.S. national team.

While at NYU, Willock compiled a 170-54 epee record. She earned Second Team All-America honors by finishing eighth at the 2005 NCAA Fencing Championships and won the NCAA Northeast Regional epee title that year, capping a season that saw her win a career-best 54 bouts. In addition, Willock also captured the Intercollegiate Fencing Association epee championship as a freshman in 2004.

Entering her fourth year as an assistant coach at NYU, Willock has been equally impressive guiding the Violets from the side of the strip by helping qualify 14 NYU student-athletes for the NCAA Fencing Championships. This past season, the Violets men's and women's teams combined to finish in 16th place at the NCAA Championships.
