Season in Review: Violets Continue Ascension

Men's Track & Field Qualifies Again for NCAA's

McKinney provided a spark in the sprint events.

The New York University men's track & field team saw several of its members put forth tremendous seasons in 2010, while the team itself continued to develop into a national contender. Led by their distance runners, many of whom make up NYU's powerhouse cross country team, the Violets went toe-to-toe against some of the top programs in Division III and held their own against several Division I foes.

NYU's most accomplished performer was junior Matt Turlip, who won the mile event at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships, then finished sixth nationally in the event at the NCAA Championships to earn All-American honors.

Turlip finished second in the 1,500 meters at the UAA Outdoor Championships. His work in that event qualified him to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as well.

Also strong in the distance events was junior Sebastian Schwelm, who placed second in the 10,000 meters (31:18.66) and sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:27.19) at the outdoor UAA's.

Sparking NYU in the middle distance events was freshman Daniel McKinney. During the indoor season, he excelled in the 200 meters and 400 meters, while also competing with NYU's 4x400 and distance medley relay teams.

At the UAA Indoor Championships, he placed second and third in the 400m (49.83) and 200m (23.22), respectively. His strong rookie season continued in the spring as he won both the 200m (22.64) and 400m (49.22) titles at the UAA Outdoor Championships. For his efforts, McKinney was named UAA Rookie of the Year both indoors and outdoors. He also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400 meters.

"Dan had a tremendous first season," head coach Nick McDonough said. "His transition to college competition has been seamless. I expect him to continue to improve."

Another freshman providing a boost to the program was Jonny Annunziata, who emerged as the team's top performer in the throwing events. He finished fifth in the shot put at the indoor UAA's with a personal-best throw of 14.17 meters (46'6”). At the outdoor UAA's, Annunziata finished fourth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 13.80 meters.

A pair of Violets honed their skills in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as both junior Calvin Lee and sophomore Ryan Boyd finished in the top three at the UAA Championships. Lee also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event.

The 2010 team was also successful in the classroom as 12 members earned UAA Winter Sport and UAA Spring Sport All-Academic honors.
