Freshman Daniel McKinney and senior Calvin Lee were the Violets' representatives on Friday as members of NYU's men's and women's track & field team competed at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Thursday-Saturday, May 27-29, in Berea, OH.
Lee ran in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished ninth of 16 competitors with a time of 9:13.09. The top eight finishers earned All-America honors.
Coming into the competition, Lee had posted the 13th-fastest time (9:09.31) in the nation.
McKinney, competing in the 400-meter time trials, finished sixth in his heat. His time of 48.89 ranked 12th overall among the 17 runners and was not fast enough to qualify for Saturday's final.
McKinney entered the meet having posted the 13th-fastest time (48.27) in Division III during the season.
On Thursday, junior Matt Turlip, sophomore Maeve Evans and freshman Kirsten Keller each participated in their respective events on the opening day of the meet.
Turlip, ranked seventh in the nation in the 1,500 meters coming into the competition, ran a time of 4:03.24 and finished eighth in his heat. Evans, also ranked seventh nationally in the women's 1,500m, posted a time of 4:35.87 and finished ninth in her heat.
Neither runner qualified for the event finals.
Running in the second of two heats, Evans' time would have won the first heat. The top four finishers in each heat, plus the next four fastest times, qualified for the final. Evans posted the ninth-best overall time in a field of 19 runners.
"Maeve ran very well. She was in a very competitive heat and it was a mass sprint to the finish," said NYU head coach Nick McDonough. "She came up a hair short. But, for her to come up one place short of the finals at her first outdoor national championship meet was still a great accomplishment."
Both Evans and Turlip earned NCAA indoor All-America honors in the mile earlier this season.
Also, on Thursday, Keller competed in the 10,000-meter final and finished 16th overall in a time of 38:22.97. She entered the race ranked 12th nationally.
