Daniel McKinney has burst onto the New York University track & field scene as a freshman.
The sprinter won two individual titles at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships amid the rain and wind at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, on Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25, and was subsequently named UAA Rookie of the Year.
On Sunday, McKinney won the 200 meters with a career-best time of 22.14. He then captured the 400 meters in a time of 49.22 after posting a personal-best 49.02 in Saturday's preliminary heats.
"Dan competed hard and had a tremendous weekend," said NYU head coach
Nick McDonough. "Winning the 200 in a personal-best time considering the rainy, windy conditions was huge. That type of weather is especially tough on sprinters."
The title-winning performances were only the latest accomplishments of what has been an impressive debut season for McKinney. At the UAA Indoor Championships in March, he placed second in the 400 (49.83) and third in the 200 (23.22).
One of McDonough's most versatile performers, McKinney has been a member of NYU's outdoor 4x100m relay (45.17), 4x400m relay (3:29.21) and 4x800m relay (7:52.65) that have all recorded season-best times.
Individually, McKinney has also run a season-best 1:57.09 in the 800 meters.
"Dan's had a tremendous first season, and there's still three weeks to go," McDonough said. "His transition to college competition has been seemless. He's in great shape and is still looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships next month."
