The New York University men's golf team has an eight-stroke lead on the field after the first round of the University Athletic Association Golf Championship being held in Rochester, NY.
Through 18 holes and a day of dank and dreary playing conditions, the Violets lead the five-team field with a team score of 307 on the 6,186-yard, par-72 Locust Hill Country Club golf course in Rochester.
Emory University is the closest team to NYU with a score of 315, whil host University of Rochester is in third with a 324 mark.
“We are very excited with a great first day, but we have to bring it back together tomorrow,” said NYU head coach Todd Kolean. “We're dealing with rain and cold weather, so we are certainly hoping to get the next round in and hoping to hold our position.”
The Violets have four men in the top eight scorers and all five in the top 10.
A trio of NYU golfers is near the top of the leaderboard with matching 76's after the first day. Senior Mike Leibfried, sophomore Matt Riccio and freshman Gabe Durkin all share third place with their four-over par scores.
Junior Ben Kleiner also tallied a solid round with a 79, good enough for eighth place overall. Junior David Su fired an 81 and is tied for 10th place.
