The New York University men's tennis team ended its 2009-10 season by falling 5-0 to the University of Rochester in the seventh-place match at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday, April 24, in Pittsburgh, PA.
NYU had faced Rochester during the regular season, losing 7-2 on April 10. This time around, however, the Violets could not win any individual matches.
The junior duo of Alex Stoler and Matt Gross came up just short in a 9-7 loss at #1 doubles on Saturday. After losing the next two doubles matches, NYU went down 3-0 heading into singles play.
At #1 singles, junior Jason Sacher was defeated 6-3, 6-2. Despite his best efforts, Violet senior captain Eugene Tsarevskiy ended his career with a 6-4, 6-0 loss at #4 singles.
"I'm proud of our guys. I thought they played tough the whole weekend," said NYU head coach Horace Choy. "Despite the result, I thought we were much better than the last time we faced Rochester."
NYU (4-11), came into the UAA Championship seeded #8. The Violets opened on Friday with a 9-0 loss to #1 Washington University, and lost 6-0 to #4 University of Chicago this morning.
Those losses placed the Violets in the seventh-place match against Rochester (11-11), the #7-seeded team.
"The end result is not ideal, obviously. But, in this conference, I thought we held our own," Choy said.
Losing Tsarevskiy and fellow senior #P.J. Marranca# to graduation will be tough for NYU. But, a deep and talented junior class will lead a large group of returnees for next season.
