The New York University women's golf team put together a strong second round on Sunday, April 18, to close out the Jack Leaman Championship hosted by Amherst College.

The Violets finished ninth of 11 teams at the two-day event, but NYU dropped 17 strokes on the second day to finish with a combined team score of 707. NYU was just six strokes behind Holy Cross (701) for seventh place and five strokes off Mount Holyoke College (702) for eighth place. Amherst College won the invite with a score of 359.

“Overall, I was happy with our team total” said NYU assistant coach Matt Huck. “We came back after a rough first day and put up numbers in the range we should be at.”

Junior Theresa Apoznanski and freshman Jiye Kim led the Violets individually with matching totals of 169 to finish in a tie for 17th place. Apoznanski took five strokes off her first day total on Sunday with an 82 on the par-72, 5,360-yard The Orchards Golf Course in South Hadley, MA.

Kim had one of the more consistent outings of her career, posting her second lowest two-day tally on a difficult course that hosted the 2004 U.S. Women's Open.

Rounding out the scoring for the Violets were freshmen Sarah Utz (183, 47th) and Charlotte Abrams (186, t-49th).

“We left some shots out there on the course. But, our biggest issue is putting two good days together,” Huck said. “Hopefully we can do that to close out the season.”

The women's golf team will be back in action next weekend, April 24-25, as they travel to Williamstown, MA, to compete in the Williams College Invitational.
