On Saturday, April 17, the New York University women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Washington University at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Cleveland, OH.
The eight-seeded Violets (3-9) were coming off an opening-round 5-0 loss to #1 seed Emory University on Friday. That defeat placed them against fourth-seeded Washington (12-5), the #14 team in the latest ITA Women's Tennis Division III National Poll.
The Violets fought early and were down only 2-1 after doubles matches. Freshmen Alexa Wimes and Flora Lee posted an 8-6 victory at #1 doubles.
Washington then distanced itself from NYU in singles play, taking four of six matches.
Elizabeth Stachtiaris won a three-set thriller, eventually prevailing 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 at #2 singles.
At #3 singles, Lee triumphed 6-1, 2-6, 10-5.
"Give Washington credit because they bounced back after a tough loss of their own to University of Rochester," said NYU head coach Horace Choy. "They came out ready to play against us, taking two of three doubles matches."
The Violets will play later today against host Case Western Reserve University, who lost to Brandeis University 5-3 earlier on Saturday.
