Final Individual Scores
The New York University women's golf team competed better on Sunday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, NY, at the Vassar College Invitational, but many shots didn't fall the Violets' way in the end.
As a team, the Violets shot a combined two-day score of 713 to place them eighth overall on the 5,805-yard, par-72 Dutchess Golf and Country Club course. After being in a three-way tie for sixth place after the first round, the Violets shot five strokes better as a squad but couldn't't out-swing SUNY Cortland and Mt. Holyoke College as they moved in front for sixth and seventh place, respectively.
Amherst College won the invite with a score of 670, winning by six strokes.
“We shot five strokes better today, but not taking advantage of the first day hurt us a little bit,” said NYU assistant coach Matt Huck. “We finished in a range where we wanted. But, it just didn't develop to move any higher in the standings.”
Leading the Violets for the weekend was junior Theresa Apoznanski. She shot four strokes better on Sunday for an 83 (+11) to finish in a tie for ninth place with a final tally of 170.
Once again, a group of freshmen rounded out the team scoring for NYU. Jiye Kim followed up her day-one score of 86 with a 92 on Sunday, finishing in a tie for 25th place. Sarah Utz was one stroke off Kim, finishing with a total 179 for 27th place. Also, Charlotte Abrams chipped in with a 186, good enough for 40th overall.
“We're heading in the right direction and need to be more consistent,” Huck said. “Too many swings aren't consistent enough. We'll have the chance over the next two weekends of putting up better numbers.”
The Violets will be back in action next Sunday morning at the Jack Leaman Invitational hosted by Amherst.
