Both the New York University men's and women's teams will be represented at the upcoming NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, this weekend.
Junior Matt Turlip and sophomore Maeve Evans will compete in the men's and women's mile, respectively,
The Championships are being held on Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, with the men's preliminary mile set for 4:00 pm on Friday and the final scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday. The women's prelim is set for 4:20 pm on Friday, with the final at 2;10 on Saturday.
Turlip will be competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships for the second consecutive season. In 2009, he led-off NYU's distance medley relay team that finished ninth in the nation.
Turlip's best time in the mile this season was the 4:09.09 that he ran at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Feb. 23. This past Saturday, Turlip won the mile at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.
Evans will be competing at her first NCAA Indoor Championships, although she ran and was the Violets' second finisher as the team qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championship last November for the first time in school history.
So far during this indoor season, Evans has set individual team records in the mile (5:00.17) and the 800 meters (2:17.81), establishing both those marks at last weekend's UAA Championships. Earlier in the season, at the NYC Gotham Cup on Jan. 15, she helped the Violets set the 4x800-meter record (9:53.08).
Evans becomes the first women's team member to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships since both Melinda Childs (55-meter hurdles) and Lauren Henkel (high jump) competed in 2004.
