The New York University men’s tennis team was in Middlebury, VT, this weekend to take part in the Middlebury College Invitational.
On Friday, the Violets took on Brandeis University and were defeated, 9-0. The tough luck continued on Saturday, as NYU was topped by host Middlebury College, 9-0. With the two losses, NYU’s record falls to 0-5.
The Violets have been without injured first singles standout Patrick Whitner, who has missed the entire spring season to this point. The injury has caused the rest of the lineup to play a higher flight than customary. While it’s set the team back, head coach Horace Choy doesn’t want his players to use Whitner’s injury as an excuse.
“You miss a talent like (Whitner) and it pushes everyone up, but we don’t want to think about that," he said. "Every team goes through something like this, and our goal is to work hard and get better. We just ran into two good teams this weekend. Brandeis has gotten a lot better since last season. Middlebury is ranked #4 in the nation and is as good a team as I’ve seen in a while.”
NYU will try to get back on track Mar. 25 against Drew University.
