The New York University men's and women’s golf squads are ready for their first event of the 2010 spring season, the McDaniel College Spring Invitational, on March 27-28.
The McDaniel Invite will take place at the par 72, 6,713 yard Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown, PA. Fifteen teams will compete on the men’s side and seven teams are vying for the top spot in the women’s field.
"We are excited going into the spring season at the McDaniel Invitational," said NYU head coach Todd Kolean. "The golfers have been hitting at Chelsea Piers and are doing weight training."
For the NYU men’s team it was a successful 2009 fall season, with the Violets' second-place finish at the ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate Championship being the group’s top outing.
Senior Mike Leibfried led NYU in scoring during the fall with a 74.9 average, two top-five finishes and a first-place showing at the ECAC Championships.
Junior David Su fired the lowest single round of the fall season with a 70 at the ECAC Championships, while sophomore Matt Riccio placed in the top-20 four times in five events played.
On the women’s side, junior Theresa Apoznanski was hard to top in the fall. She compiled three top-five finishes, including a win at the Martin/Wallace Invitational and a second-place showing at the NYU/Manhattanville Golf Classic.
Several underclassmen made their mark in 2009 on the women’s team. Freshmen Sarah Utz and Jiye Kim were second and third in scoring, respectively. As a team, the women had two third-place finishes, the first coming at the St. Lawrence University Fall Invitational and the other at the Martin/Wallace Invitational.
"Going into spring, every event is important for the men's team. We will see several UAA schools prior to the UAA Championships in Rochester,” Kolean said. “On the women's side ,the Vassar Tournament and the last event at Williams College are really what we are focusing on."
