Several members of the New York University men's fencing team will compete at the NCAA Regionals on Sunday, March 14, at Brown University in Providence, RI.
The Violets are 10-13 this season in dual meets and are the top-ranked NCAA Division III team in the country. In the Violets' last outing, they defeated Vassar College 17-10, lost to Sacred Heart by a 14-13 margin, and took down Columbia University 19-8 at a quad meet at Columbia on Feb. 3.
The epee team has been led all season by senior Andrew Stanco and junior Byron Neslund. Stanco, a co-captain for the team, has compiled a 29-33 record this season while Neslund is third on the team in wins with a record of 32-25.
Freshman Phil Jamesson has been difficult to defeat this year in foil, as he leads NYU with a 42-19 record. Jamesson is coming off a solid performance at the United States Fencing Association Junior Olympic National Championships in Memphis, TN, on Feb. 14-15. He placed 52nd out of 205 competitors to continue an outstanding rookie season for NYU.
Freshman Ken Sin, junior Oung-Jo Yuh and senior Barret Elward will also round out the foil squad at the NCAA Regionals.
The NYU sabre team has had a great deal of success, as well, relying mainly on the performances of seniors Jared Hammond and Sam Roukas. Hammond has put together a 27-13 record while Roukas is second on the team in wins with a 39-14 mark.
