Four Men's Cross Country Runners Receive Academic Honor

Violet Foursome Earn Praise from USTFCCCA

Zach Maher had four top-five finishes in 2009.

Four New York University men's cross country team members have been named as 2009 Division III Cross Country All-Academic honorees as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday, February 26.

Sophomore Ryan Boyd, senior Calvin Lee, senior Zach Maher, and junior Sebastian Schwelm were the four Violets who performed well in races and in the classroom.

The USTFCCCA All-Academic awards honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average and must finish in the top 35 among the field at their NCAA regional meet.

Boyd, who is in the NYU Liberal Studies Program and plans on majoring in history, ran his fastest 8K time of the 2009 season at the Oberlin College Inter-Regional Rumble on Oct. 17 (25.52). Lee, an economics major, was near the front of the pack for most of the season, garnering four top-10 finishes and posting a top 8K mark at Oberlin (25:26).

Maher, a politics major, had top-10 finishes in each of his five races last fall, including four top-five places. He posted a winning time of 26.06 at the University Athletics Association Championship on Oct. 31.

Schwelm, a music composition major, also helped the Violets throughout the season. His top finish was posted at the NCAA Regionals, where his season-best time of 25:35 placed him 15th overall.

All four are also current members of the NYU track & field team.
