On Tuesday, Feb. 23, two members of the New York University men's swimming & diving team, senior sprinter Eric Pcholinski and junior diver Max Norris, were named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week for men's swimming and men's diving, respectively.
Both Pcholinski and Norris posted top finishes in multiple events for NYU at the UAA Championships in Atlanta, GA, on Feb. 17-20. The Violets took fifth place in the eight-team field.
Pcholinski, garnering the weekly accolade for the third time in his career, claimed victories in the 50 freestyle (21.94) and 100 freestyle (45.53), posting NCAA B-cut times in both events. Following competition on Saturday, the Saybrook, CT, native was honored as the UAA Men's Swimmer of the Year.
"Eric really was the MVP of the meet and had some fantastic swims," said NYU head coach Bob Sorensen on Saturday. "He deserved it, and those times will definitely qualify him for the NCAA Championships."
Norris posted top finishes in both diving events at the UAA's. The Rochester, NY, native tallied totals of 431.20 in the one-meter dive and 427.65 in the three-meter dive, the former being an NCAA-qualifying score. In addition to being named the UAA Athlete of the Week for the 16th time in his career, Norris was also named the UAA Men's Diver of the Year on Saturday.
"It was a great day for Max," said NYU diving coach Scott Donie after the UAA's. "With his two victories this year, and the two victories from his freshman year, he is now 4-4 at UAA's."
Donie and Todd Kolean were named the UAA Diving Coaching Staff of the Year.
The Violets will return to the pool on Saturday, Feb. 27, when they host the NYU Last Chance Invitational. Area swimmers and divers will get their final opportunity to post NCAA-qualifying times.
