On Wednesday, Feb. 17, the New York University men's swimming & diving team will open competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
Although NYU head coach Bob Sorensen has lost several of his key swimmers from last year's fifth-place squad, a number of new faces have stepped up this season for the Violets (7-4). Senior Eric Pcholinski, a seven-time All-American swimmer and the top Violet sprinter, posted second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (20.82) and the 100 freestyle (45.32) at last year's championships.
The sophomore duo of Bryson Naylor and James Bedell have been perhaps Sorensen's most consistent swimmers. Individually, the two have garnered top finishes in all but one meet this season.
On the diving board, junior Max Norris will look to contribute to the Violet effort. The Rochester, NY, native has been named the UAA Athlete of the Week seven times this season and a grand total of 16 times in his stellar career.
Standing between NYU and a top finish at the UAA's is perhaps the best swimming & diving competition in the nation. In the Dec. 27 College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III Poll, the UAA was one of the best represented conferences. Four annual rivals---Emory (4), Washington University (6), Carnegie Mellon University (8), and University of Chicago (14)--- were ranked in the top 25, while the University of Rochester also received votes. NYU and Brandeis University did not receive any votes.
"This is what we look forward to every season." said Sorensen earlier this season. "We want to be swimming and diving our best at UAAs."
Wednesday's competition ill begins at 10:00 am with the women's one-meter dive. The meet will conclude on Saturday.
