The New York University wrestling team took a short trip uptown on Wednesday, November 17, to participate in a tri-meet hosted by Hunter College. The team lost its opener to 12th-ranked The College of New Jersey 28-9, but finished the night strong with a 24-13 victory over city rival Hunter.
While the team ended the night 1-1, they left with plenty of reasons to be satisfied with their results.
Even though he was not victorious, Sabino Galassi wrestled very well in his match against TCNJ's All-American Mike Denver. In a hard fought battle, Denver barely squeaked out a 4-3 decision.
“That match was the best I have seen Galassi wrestle all year,” said NYU assistant coach
Corey Luce. “Denver was an All-American last year, and each time last year that he wrestled Galassi, he won by major decision.”
The match against Hunter was hard fought, and in the early bouts the team score went back and forth. At one point, an 8-3 upset by Hunter's Eduardo Delgado over NYU All-American
Matt Magill gave Hunter a 10-9 advantage. It was then that NYU buckled down and pulled out three straight decisive victories.
Jakub Pawlowski earned NYU five crucial points with his 19-4 technical fall win over Jesse Capello-Colon. Galassi then padded NYU's lead with a 17-5 major decision. In the next match,
Steve Massey sealed a team victory by pinning his opponent in 2:06.
“Our win against Hunter was big,” said Luce. “Our city rivalry with them always creates an emotional match. We see them every year at New York States and the Met Championships, so it's always nice to beat them.”
Calvin Hawkes (149) and
Will Ladnier (125) both had very strong nights as each wrestler won two matches.
In his first match, Hawkes pinned TCNJ's John Darling in 6:45. He would later earn an 11-8 decision over Jimmy Mustakis of Hunter.
Ladnier gave NYU early 3-0 leads in both matches, as he defeated TCNJ's Dan Hughes and Hunter's Oliver Lopez 5-3 and 9-8, respectively.
The grapplers continue their season on December 4, as they travel to Indianola, IA, to compete in the Simpson College Invitational.
