The New York University women's swimming & diving team lost for the first time this season, a 161-137 defeat at the hands of The College of New Jersey on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Palladium Athletic Facility. The Violets (7-1), who are ranked #19 in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III Poll, matched up well with TCNJ, but came out on the wrong side of the competition.
"This match could have went either way really," said NYU head coach Lauren Beam. "Today, they were the better team."
Junior Chelsea Pfohl was one of three Violets to post victories on Saturday. She had a winning time of 1:02.84 in the 100 backstroke. Later in the meet, she added a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (59.72).
Sophomore Molly Rippe contributed a first-place performance in the 1,000 freestyle (10:09.52). She also claimed second place in the 500 freestyle (5:18.24). Sophomore Kristen Fujii raced to victory in the 200 individual medley (2:15.02) and added a second-place time of 55.46 in the 100 freestyle.
Even in the events the Violets did not win, they managed second and third-place finishes to keep them in the hunt.
"Our depth was great today," added Beam. "This was some of the best competition we faced all year and we were extremely competitive."
On the diving board, sophomore Kelly Dietz posted victories in both events. She tallied 256.13 points in the one-meter dive and 288.50 points in the three-meter dive. Both totals are NCAA-qualifying scores.
"Kelly continues to get stronger and stronger every meet," said NYU diving coach Scott Donie.
The Violets look to bounce back next week when they travel to Vassar College on Saturday, Jan. 30. That is the last dual meet of the season for NYU.
