Meet Results
Last season, the New York University women's swimming & diving team looked unstoppable, climbing to a 7-0 dual-meet record before falling to the Springfield College Pride last Jan. 17.
The Violets could have succumbed to a similar fate this season, facing Springfield with a 6-0 record almost exactly one year later. However, this time NYU continued its perfection and avenged its only loss of 2008-09 with a 180-120 victory over the Pride at the Palladium Athletic Facility on Saturday, Jan. 16.
"It's always a big meet when we play Springfield," said NYU head coach Lauren Beam. "Every year they give us great competition and something to really look forward to."
Freshman Tatum Gormley posted two individual first-place finishes for the Violets. She claimed victories in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.22) and the 200 butterfly (2:11.90). Gormley also swam a leg for NYU's first-place 200 medley relay (1:52.61). She was joined by freshmen Claire Stephens and Noel Elgamal, as well as junior Chelsea Pfohl. Pfohl also posted winning times of 1:01.21 in the 100 backstroke and 59.85 in the 100 butterfly, while Stephens, a sprinting specialist, raced to a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle (25.31).
Other highlights for the Violets included individual victories by a trio of sophomores: Molly Rippe in the 500 freestyle (5:16.50), Regina Romain in the 200 backstroke (2:14.11), and Kristen Fujii in the 200 individual medley (2:13.94).
"It really speaks to the depth of our team with all of these individuals stepping up," Beam added. "That depth will be the largest factor for our success at upcoming meets, including the UAA (University Athletic Association) Championships."
On the diving board, sophomore Kelly Dietz topped the field in both events. She posted NCAA qualifying scores of 258.88 and 280.45 in the one-meter and three-meter dives, respectively.
"This was some of the best diving competition in the nation," said NYU diving coach Scott Donie. "She really excelled today by posting some of her highest totals of the season."
The Violets return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they host The College of New Jersey.
