Women's Cross Country Finishes Sixth at Williams

Violets Run Against the Best at Purple Valley Classic

Kanarkiewicz was the nationally-ranked Violets' top finisher.

The New York University women's cross country team posted a sixth-place finish at the Williams College Purple Valley Classic on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Running against five of the nation's top 27 teams, the #33-ranked Violets totaled 158 points to claim sixth place in the 12-team, 6K race.

Top-ranked Middlebury College (69 points) finished third behind #4 Johns Hopkins University (29 points) and #7 Williams (55 points). Oberlin College, ranked #27 in the nation, finished fourth (111 points) and Colby College (139 points) finished just ahead of NYU .

The Violets did finish ahead of #23-ranked SUNY Plattsburgh (11th place, 328 points).

NYU's top finisher was Joan Kanarkiewicz, who took 16th place in a time of 23:14. Kirsten Keller was the next Violet to cross the finish line (24th place, 23:28).

"We didn't get out well and had trouble moving up,: said NYU head coach Nick McDonough. "We were too far back to catch up."

Maeve Evans was the Violets' third finisher, taking 43rd place in a time of 24:23. Kerra Vick (24:49), Paige Zelinsky (24:51) and #Laura Santoski# (24:52) finished 59th-61st, respectively.

"It was a good learning experience for us going against national-caliber competition," McDonough concluded. "We will have better outings as the season progresses."
