January Romero has joined new head coach Todd Kolean’s staff as an assistant men’s and women’s golf coach at New York University.
A 2006 graduate of Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, Romero brings impressive credentials to Washington Square.
A four-year member and four-time All-Ivy League honoree as part of Yale’s golf team, Romero served as captain during her senior campaign. Career highlights included winning the William & Mary Invitational by six strokes as a sophomore, placing second at the Lady Hoya Invitational at Georgetown University as a senior and at the Ivy League Championship as a freshman (she finished third in each of her final three seasons). As a junior, Romero set the team record with a two-round total of 145 (76-69) at William & Mary.
During her senior year, Romero received the “Widdy Neal Award” for demonstrated leadership and largest contribution to the Yale women’s golf team.
“I’m very excited to have January join our coaching staff. She has proven herself as a student-athlete at the collegiate level and with her play on the amateur level,” said NYU head coach Todd Kolean. “While she's a great, great player, it’s her team leadership and her commitment to teach and coach our athletes which excites me most.”
In addition to her position at NYU, Romero also works for the Lawyers Alliance for New York. She will be attending NYU Wagner in the fall to pursue a Master of Public Administration degree in public and nonprofit management and policy.
Romero has also spent time as a volunteer at the Corinne Wolfe Children’s Law Center – Institute of Public Law and at the Legacy School Tutoring Program in New York City.
A native of Albuquerque, NM, Romero was honored on June 29, 2008, with a proclamation by then-Mayor Jim Baca of Albuquerque on “January Romero Day.” The Fraternal Order of Police and New Mexico Peace Officers Association also honored Romero for her involvement “in working with underprivileged children and being a role model.”
Romero is a resident of New York City.
