The New York University women's swimming & diving team has had its share of victories this season. Excluding the Princeton Invitational, which featured three Division I programs, the team has bested the competition in every meet. On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Violets continued that trend, topping six other teams at the MIT Invitational in Cambridge, MA.
NYU held a slim lead over host MIT after day one concluded, but distanced itself on Saturday. The Violets, tallying a score of 1045 points, swam away from the competition, outscoring second-place MIT by nearly 200 points.
"Just great racing all around," said NYU head coach Lauren Beam. "This meet gave us a good look at our depth and what we are capable of achieving."
On the second and final day of competition, freshman Tatum Gormley helped lead NYU with victories in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.83) as well as the 400 individual medley (4:37.85). Senior co-captain Danielle Hildebrandt also contributed a first-place performance in the 200 freestyle (1:57.18).
The Violets, sitting in first place, took a commanding lead after the 1,650 freestyle event. Led by sophomore Molly Rippe who recorded a first-place time of 17:24.34, NYU swimmers took the top four spots.
In the second-to-last event on Saturday, the 200 butterfly, Gormley and Hildebrandt finished one-two with times of 2:10.29 and 2:10.55, respectively.
A first-place performance by Rippe highlighted Friday's competition. She won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:06.27. Gormley also added a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:11.79).
On the diving board, sophomore Kelly Dietz garnered second place in the three-meter event with a total of 234.05 points, less than three points behind the top score. On Friday, she claimed first place in the one-meter dive with a score of 258.10.
The Violets now have a month before their next meet. The team will open up their spring semester schedule on Jan. 9 at the Ft. Lauderdale Invitational.
"It will be nice to have a short break from meets," added Beam. "Now we can focus solely on training as we make a push for the second half of the season."
