In a stunning turnaround, the NYU wrestling team won the last three bouts of the match and overtook Hunter College 20-18 on Friday afternoon at the Hunter College Sportsplex in Manhattan.
Trailing 18-7 with three bouts left, 184-pounder Sabino Galassi kept NYU's hopes alive with a 16-6 major decision over the Hawks' Alan Djokic, bringing the score to 18-11..
Still needing a win to take the match, Jamie Myers (197) continued the comeback with a 4-0 shutout of Hunter's RJ Klotz to pull NYU within 18-14.
Then, heavyweight Justin Murberg took to the mat needing at least a major decision to pull NYU into a tie or a technical fall to produce a victory. Well, the freshman did even better than that, producing his team-high fifth fall over Hunter's Chris Molfetas in only 53 seconds to give NYU six points and the improbable victory.
“We were fortunate to win this match,” said NYU head coach Bruce Haberli. “I felt they outworked us.”
It was the fourth win for NYU in its last five matches, as the grapplers raised their record to 4-3 this season.
"A win is always nice," Haberli conceded. "But, we have a lot of work to do."
NYU returns right back to the mat on Saturday, Dec. 5, for a home match against Franklin & Marshall University beginning at 5:00pm at the Coles Sports Center.
