Box Score

Carl Yaffe scored all of his 10 points during the opening half as the New York University men's basketball team rode a strong start to an 89-47 victory over the New York City College of Technology on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, NY.

Chip Borsi tallied a career-high 10 points, while Omar Meziab poured in a team-high 11 points as 14 different players entered the scoring column for the Violets (5-2), who shot 59.6% (31-for-52), including 52.0% (13-for-25) from three-point range.

NYU removed virtually all doubt about the final outcome by scoring on five of its first six possessions. Keith Jensen (9 points, 3-for-7 3FG), Yaffe (4-for-5 FG, 2-for-3 3FG, 4 assists in 17 minutes) and Meziab (3-for-5 FG, 2-for-2 3FG) each buried three-pointers, while Stein and Becker each converted lay-ups to produce a 13-2 cushion just 3:27 into the contest.

Eventually, the Violets left the floor with a 45-20 lead, shooting a blistering 66.7% (16-for-24) from the floor while producing their highest-scoring opening half this season. Yaffe dished out four assists in 14 first-half minutes while also canning two trifectas as NYU went 6-for-11 (54.5%) from beyond the arc.

"It was a great win in that the guys executed early.  We put 45 points up on the board with no fast breaks," NYU head coach Joe Nesci said.  "And we got contributions from guys who have been working hard every day, which was nice to see."

Taking a large lead into the second half afforded Nesci the luxury of giving younger players extended runs. Ben Dorman produced a career-high eight points, including two trifectas, while sophomore Cody John (2 points) and rookies Devin Karch (4) and Andy Ottenweller (6) produced their first collegiate points.

Richie Polan contributed nine points and a team-best 10 rebounds as the Violets owned a 39-27 edge on the glass. Derek Becker hit all three of his field-goal attempts and swiped a career-high five steals for NYU.

Gabriel Davis led all scorers with 16 points for City Tech (0-9).

NYU is off until Wednesday, Dec. 30, when it travels to intracity rival Hunter College for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
