The New York University women's volleyball team has received an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship and will host an eight-team bracket beginning this Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
After completing a 28-9 regular season which included a fourth-place finish in the University Athletic Association, the Violets received the NCAA bid and will host the Polytechnic Institute of NYU (25-9) in a first-round match-up at 8:30 pm on Thursday,
Three other first-round matches will be held on Thursday, as Salisbury University (30-4) faces City College of New York (24-12) at 1:00 pm, SUNY New Paltz (32-5) meets Roger Williams University (21-10) at 3:30 pm, and Christopher Newport University (24-12) will play Stevens Institute of Technology (26-9) at 6:00 pm.
First-day winners will play again on Friday, with semifinals being held at 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm, with the two survivors competing for the New York Region title on Saturday at 8:00pm. The winner of that championship match will advance to the Elite Eight in Cleveland, OH, Nov. 18-20.
Of the other seven teams in the bracket, NYU has already faced Polytechnic and SUNY New Paltz this season, defeating its opponents by scores of 3-0 and 3-2, respectively.
The Violets are returning to the NCAA Championship for the first time since the 2006 season, when they advanced to the Second Round.
NYU's selection marks the sixth time in Ed Caesar's eight years as head coach that the Violets have earned a NCAA bid.
"I'm excited about us having the opportunity to play in the tournament again and to be a host this season," Caesar said. "It's a strong bracket here and there will be stiff competition all weekend."
