Both the New York University men's and women's basketball teams will host their annual, four-team Tip-Off Tournaments this weekend at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center. The nationally ranked NYU women will host a first-round game against the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Friday night at 6 p.m., while the Violets' men will tip off against Skidmore College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
This year's women's tournament will also feature Lehman College and Purchase College, which will oppose each other in the other first-round game Friday at 8 p.m. Winners of both first-round games will vie for the tournament title at 8 p.m. Saturday, while the first-round losers will play the third-place game at 6 p.m.
Ranked #19 in the D3Hoops.com Top 25 and #22 in the USA Today ESPN Division III Coaches Poll, NYU (1-1) has won all seven Tip-Off Tournament titles since the tourney's inception in 2002, going 14-0 with 11 double-digit victories.
In the men's tournament, Elmira College and Ferrum College will face each other in the first-round game Saturday at 3 p.m. First-round winners will play for the championship Sunday at 3 p.m., while the losing teams will be relegated to the third-place contest at 1 p.m.
NYU (1-0) is coming off an 83-59 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology that featured five double-digit scoring performances, including a team-high 16 tallies from Keith Jensen. The Violets have won 11 of the previous 18 Tip-Off Tournament championships, including a 70-62 triumph over Connecticut College last season.
