For their efforts in leading the New York University men’s and women’s cross country teams to another highly successful season, Nick McDonough and his coaching staff have been honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA).

McDonough and his assistants, James McCarthy and Jon Phillips, were named UAA Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year. In addition, they share the honor of Women’s Co-Coaching Staff of the Year with Washington University.

It is only McDonough’s second season as coach of the women’s cross country team, and the results speak for themselves thus far. In just a short time, the NYU women have improved dramatically under the guidance of the new staff, placing a best-ever third at the UAA Championship this season.

Previous to this season, the Violets had posted four consecutive last-place finishes at the UAA Championship. NYU’s top finish prior to this season was a fourth-place performance in 2003.

Individually, three Violet runners (Joan Kanarkiewicz, Kirsten Keller, Maeve Evans) earned All-UAA honors in 2009.

This season, the NYU men’s team won its fourth consecutive UAA team title and produced its third straight individual champion (Zach Maher)..

It is the fourth straight season that the NYU men’s cross country staff has been named UAA Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year.
