Senior Mike Leibfried carded the lowest individual score in the field with an even-par 144 to lead the New York University’s men’s golf team to a second-place finish at the ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate Championship at the Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, NY, on Sunday, Oct. 4.
Trailing by two strokes heading into Sunday’s final round, Leibfried’s steady play kept him in the hunt for the title and eventually led to his second individual championship and his first in a two-day tournament. He notched back-to-back even-par 72's on the 6,642 yard Ravenwood course.
“Mike shot very consistent. His swing was on all day long,” said head coach Todd Kolean. “He was minus-2 strokes for a while. He double bogeyed hole 17, but he fought back on 18 to get a birdie.”
The Violets shot a team total of 595 and were nine strokes better on Sunday, but St. John Fisher College was able to hang on for the team title with a score of 583.
Junior David Su can take credit for the low round of the tournament for NYU after he shot a two-under 70 on Sunday. He finished with a total score of 150.
Rounding out the scoring for the NYU “A” team were sophomore Matt Riccio (154) and junior Ben Kleiner (154). Scott Dow Jr. also had a solid round of 74 Sunday as a member of the “A” squad.
NYU’s “B” team performed well by finishing in fifth place overall with a score of 623. Freshman Gabe Durkin led the way with a 151, followed by junior Aakash Patel (155), sophomore Alex Laznovsky (157) and sophomore Andreas #Thoma-Baker# (161).
“We shot well today,” Kolean said. “Anytime you can come off a good first round you want to put yourself in contention to win at the end.”
The NYU men’s golf team will return to the links next Saturday, Oct. 10, to begin play at the Hamilton College Invitational in Clinton, NY.
