Emily Jenkinson's 59th-minute goal breathed life into New York University's upset hopes, but the Violets were unable to add the equalizer in a 2-1 loss to nationally ranked University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) action Friday afternoon at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Violets (9-6-1, 0-4-1 UAA) cut their deficit in half when Jenkinson collected a loose ball at the 18-yard line, then struck a hard ground ball into the lower left corner at the 58:42 mark.
However, the Maroons (13-2-1, 3-1-1 UAA), ranked #10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division III National Rankings and #11 in the D3Soccer.com Top 25, scored twice in the first 22 minutes. Brooke Bontz set up both Chicago tallies -- the first on a booming line drive into the top-right corner by Emily Benoit at 9:55, the second when Sarah Loh took a through ball and beat NYU's Alex Walters (5 saves) 1 v 1 from five yards out at 21:14.
Chicago owned a 14-5 edge on shots and a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks. Emma Gormley made one save for the Maroons.
NYU will play its final regular-season home game Sunday, Nov. 1, when it hosts UAA rival Washington University at the College of Staten Island Soccer Complex. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
