The New York University men's cross country team, ranked #18 in the latest USTFCCCA (United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Division III Rankings, defeated a field of 28 teams, including several other nationally-ranked squads, en route to victory at the Oberlin College Inter-Regional Rumble in Oberlin, OH, on Saturday.
The Violets placed three runners among the top 10 and five amid the top 20 to edge second-place (and #5 ranked) Allegheny College 53-56 in the team scoring.
Individually, 2008 Cross Country All-American Zach Maher posted a season-best time of 25:00 over the wet 8,000-meter course and placed third overall. Teammate Matt Turlip took seventh place in a season-best time of 25:16, while Jack Fitzhenry also notched a season best with his time of 25:20 in a 10th-place performance.
Overall, it was NYU's depth that clinched the victory as Calvin Lee (13th place, 25:26) and Sebastian Schwelm (20th place, 25:38) notched top-20 finishes. That helped offset Allegheny claiming the top two spots in the race, three of the top five and four of the top 16. Allegheny's fifth runner took 32nd place.
Other top-25 teams that NYU defeated in the race were #21 University Athletic Association-rival Carnegie Mellon University (third place, 98 points) and #20 Ohio Northern University (seventh place, 190 points).
"The guys really stepped up and had a good performance against other nationally-ranked teams," said head coach Nick McDonough. "We more than held our own and are in good position for the end of the season."
Overall, 243 runners competed..
