The New York University men’s golf team faced biting winds and cold weather in the final round of the Hamilton College Invite on Sunday, Oct. 11, in Clinton, NY.
The Violets improved by two strokes from round one despite the cold and finished with a 316 round-two score at the par-72 Skenandoa Golf Club. For the weekend NYU shot 634 and completed the tournament in fourth place overall. Skidmore College held on to the team lead and won with a score of 608. Hamilton (620) and Salem State College (630) rounded out the top three.
“Starting off early today was the coldest it’s been for us this year,” said head coach Todd Kolean. “The wind made the course play harder than it normally would. There were not a lot of low scores out there today.”
Senior Mike Leibfried bounced back from a tough first round and had the low score for NYU in round two with a three-over-par 75. Leibfried and sophomore Matt Riccio, who had a four-over 76 in round two, had the low totals for NYU by shooting 157, putting them in a tie for 14th place overall.
Rounding out the scoring for the Violets were juniors David Su (161) and Ben Kleiner (163) along with sophomore Scott Dow Jr. (163).
“We proved our mettle out there in the cold today by never giving up and always going after the hole,” Kolean said.
NYU will close its fall tournament slate by hosting the New York University/ Manhattanville College Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck, NY.
