The New York University men’s golf team battled a challenging course in the opening round at the Williams College Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 10, to stay in contention heading into the final round of play Sunday.
NYU came in after round one with a team score of 318 at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, NY. That score puts the Violets in a tie for fourth place overall with Manhattanville College. Skidmore College leads the pack with a 300 team score while Hamilton (307) and Salem State (315) round out the top three.
“We didn’t shoot great but everybody came in high,” said head coach Todd Kolean. “The greens were very difficult and the course was hard. Along with the field I think we did very well.”
Leading the Violets in the opening round was junior David Su and sophomore Scott Dow Jr. Both Su and Dow fired six-over-par 78s.
Junior Ben Kleiner and sophomore Matt Riccio also had matching scores as they finished with nine-over 81s. Senior Mike Leibfried, coming off a win last weekend at the ECAC Metro/Upstate Championships, finished with an 82 after several putts lipped out during his round, Kolean said.
The Violets will tee-off at the Skenandoa Golf Club in Clinton, NY, for the final round of the Hamilton Invite on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Complete results and coverage will be available at goNYUathletics.com.
