Ursinus Fall Brawl Results
The New York University wrestling team had a strong showing at its competition, the Ursinus College Fall Brawl, on Sunday in Collegeville, PA.
Two team members finished in third place in their respective weight classes, while a trio of others placed fourth.
There was no team scoring at The Brawl.
Senior co-captain Naum Shuminov produced five victories, including three falls, in taking third place at 174 pounds.
After winning his first bout, then dropping his second, Shuminov breezed through the consolation bracket. He concluded his day by pinning Justin Fitch of Muhlenberg College in 4:34.
The team's other third-place finisher was sophomore Matt Magill (157 pounds), who took a similar route to the finish line. Magill also recorded three falls and five victories. He topped off his performance by earning a sudden victory (6-4) over Carl Breitenstein of Williams College.
"Our guys wrestled tough," said NYU assistant coach Corey Luce. "They handled the pressure well in a tournament where there are no breaks and no seedings."
NYU's roster was well-represented at the competition, as a senior (Alex Chianurashvili - 197), a sophomore (Gregg Martino - 141) and a freshman (Steve Massey -184) all logged fourth-place finishes.
"This was a very challenging meet. Some people had to wrestle only six minutes apart," Luce added. "And even though it's early in the season, I like what I see from this team."
The squad returns to action this Wednesday night at the Coles Sports Center for action against The College of New Jersey and Yeshiva University beginning at 7:00 pm.
