NYU vs. Elmira Box Score
2008 ECAC Metro/Upstate Volleyball Championship
Top-seeded New York University defeated fourth-seed Elmira College 3-0 to advance to the championship match of the 2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro/Upstate Championship, Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center on the campus of NYU in Manhattan.
NYU will face third-seed SUNY Potdam for the championship after the Bear's 3-1 victory of second-seed St. John Fisher College.
Sophomore
Kasey Estes led the way with 15 kills while hitting .444 as the Violets (24-16) defeated the Soaring Eagles (16-14) 25-18, 25-14, 25-21.
In the first set, Elmira took a five-point lead at 12-7 off of strong serving from sophomore Tesia Kaczynski. However, freshman
Elizabeth Dick served 10 consecutive points for the Violets, including two service aces, to give them the lead for good at 22-16.
The Soaring Eagles took the lead early on in the second set behind two kills from freshman Brittany Raykoske. However, it was NYU’s serving that again took over the game as sophomore
Rachel Sawyer served the final 10 points of the Violets' win.
In the third set Elmira looked strong, taking a quick five-point lead at 10-5. This time, however, the Soaring Eagles were not going down without a fight as a kill from Raykoske gave them the lead at 19-18. NYU proved to be took strong, however, as it took seven of the next nine points to seal the win.
On offense, Dick was also in double-digits for NYU, as she put down 11 kills and hit .588. She also put up 10 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Freshman setter
Jillian Tremmel recorded 29 assists in two sets, while Sawyer led the team with 12 digs.
For the Soaring Eagles, junior Janice Embury recorded 10 kills. Raykoske added eight kills and hit .444 with three blocks. Freshman Katie Leo put up 12 digs on defense.
The 2008 ECAC Metro/Upstate Championship resumes at 1:00 pm with the second semifinal match, which pits second-seeded St. John Fisher College against third-seed SUNY Potsdam. The winner of that match will take on NYU at 4:00 pm for the tournament title.
