2006 NYU Cross Country Invitational Men's Results
The New York University men's cross country team, ranked #10 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Poll, placed seven runners in the top 11 and captured the 2006 NYU Cross Country Invitational team title on Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, NY.
The Violets finished with 33 points, easily outdistancing Johns Hopkins University (84), Washington and Lee College (188), Rowan University (190), and Adelphi University (197) for the team title.
Lynchburg College's Ricky Flynn won the individual championship, completing the five-mile course in 26:31.3. He edged out the University of Findlay's Kendell Simon (26:52.0) and Johns Hopkins' Patrick Brandon (26:59.5).
Sophomore Geoff McGrane was the Violets' top finisher, finishing in fourth place with a time of 27:04.6. NYU senior Jon Phillips rounded out the top five with a time of 27:07.0.
Overall, NYU produced seven of the top 11 finishers.
After Adelphi University's Jaime Julia-Perez took sixth in a time of 27:10.0, the next five runners that crossed the finish line were Violets. Junior Ryan Williams was seventh in 27:14.5, followed by senior James McCarthy (27:29.7), sophomore Jesse Schneider (27:32.4), sophomore Rob Joynt (27:33.5), and junior Ross McGraw (27:40.7).
“We were missing some of our runners for our first meet, so this was a very good effort for our first time out,” NYU head coach Nick McDonough said. “We ran a controlled race from the start and moved up gradually. We didn't move up the pack until the last mile of the race. We're training hard now and looking forward to later in the season.”
In the women's race, NYU placed seventh with 241 points led by senior Danielle Levoit's 12th-place finish. The University of Findlay captured the team championship with 40 points.
NYU returns to action next Saturday, September 23, with competition at the Williams College Invitational.
